Which cutting width to choose according to the surface of your land?

Cutting width is the first figure to look at when choosing a self-carrying mower. Too narrow, you will pass your week-ends to mow. Too wide, the machine will be difficult to maneuver and store. Here’s how to find the right width for your land.

The table to choose

Lawn surface Recommended width Examples
Up to 1 000 m2 60 to 70 cm MAC ALLISTER Autopac 61 cm, Alpina AT2 66 QA
1 000 to 2 000 m2 75 to 85 cm MTD Minirider 76 SDE, Alpina AT4 84 A
2 000 to 4 000 m2 90 to 100 cm MTD SMART RF 130 H (92 cm), Alpina BT98SD, Alpina AT3 98 A
More than 4 000 m2 100 cm and more MTD Smart RG 145 (107 cm), TEXAS XC160-108H (108 cm)

These markers concern a rather open lawn. If your garden has many trees, massifs or narrow passages, descend from a category: a narrower machine will pass everywhere.

Why the width changes everything

Going from 76 to 98 cm, it’s almost 30% more mowered surface at each passage. On a large lawn, this represents a significant gain of time at each mowing, which is hours earned over a season.

On the other hand, a large machine requires more space to turn and to be rowed. Measure the width of your passages (gate, driveway between two massifs) and the door of your shelter before buying.

Small gardens: compact first

For a lawn of a few hundred square meters, a compact self-carrying is enough. The MAC ALLISTER Autopac (61 cm, Loncin engine 224 cm3, 75 cm steering radius, 4 front and 1 rear speeds) and theAlpina AT2 66 QA (66 cm, rear pick-up tray) slip between the obstacles and fit easily.

Middle gardens: the right compromise

Between 1 000 and 2 000 m2, a width of 76 to 84 cm offers a good balance. TheAlpina AT4 84 A (84 cm, STIGA 352 cm3, 200 L tank, including mulching) is given by its manufacturer for gardens up to 3 000 m2.

Large terrain: power and efficiency

Beyond 2 000 m2, target 90 cm and more. TheAlpina AT3 98 A (98 cm, engine 500 cm3) is announced for surfaces up to 4 500 m2. For very large properties, the MTD Smart RG 145 (107 cm, engine 547 cm3, transmission Transmatic) and the TEXAS XC160-108H (108 cm, hydrostatic transmission) significantly reduces mowing time.

Width and engine go together

A large tray requires a more powerful engine to keep a regular cut, especially in high or wet grass. As a benchmark, 84 cm models often use engines of about 350 cm3, and those of more than 100 cm from 450 engines to 550 cm3.

Frequently Asked Questions

A larger coupe-t-elle lawnmower less well?

No. The cutting quality depends on the blades and their sharpening. Large trays often use two blades to cover the entire width.

Peut-on use a large self-ported on a small plot?

Yes, but you will lose in maneuverability and you will have to take over more areas by hand. This is only useful if you plan to expand your mowered surface.

Cutting width influence-t-elle consumption?

A larger engine consumes more per hour, but it mows faster. On a large area, total consumption is often comparable.
